Simplified customs controls for rail transport Moldova – Ukraine

Minister of Infrastructure and Regional Development of the Republic of Moldova Lilia Dabija and Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Development of Communities, Territories, and Infrastructure of Ukraine Oleksandr Kubrakov signed the amended Protocol to the Agreement between the Republic of Moldova and Ukraine on Railway Transport Activity of 20 March 1993.

The Protocol signed on Thursday provides for simplification of the procedures for transit of goods by rail through Ukraine to Moldova and Romania and through Moldova to Ukraine and Romania, which will increase the volume of goods transported by rail. In particular, the treaty introduces changes concerning the elimination of Ukrainian customs and border control at the Reni station.

The proposed amendments will allow to reduce the time of transport of goods from/to Giurgiulesti port complex or Romania and will have a positive impact on the final cost of goods exported/imported by beneficiaries from the Republic of Moldova, reducing transport costs.

At the same time, the logistic chains will be modified by redirecting the transport of goods from road to rail. As a result, the burden on national public roads will be reduced, which will lead to an increase in the volumes of goods in transit through the Republic of Moldova and will have a positive impact on the national economy.

Also, following the entry into force of the Protocol, seasonal rail traffic jams at the railway stations of Galati (Romania), Giurgiulesti, Reni, Etulia and Basarabeasca, which have a negative impact on the logistics cost during the harvest and export of grain products, will be reduced.
