Siemens receives first order for battery-equipped Vectron locomotives

Siemens Mobility has received its first order for Vectron locomotives equipped with a battery module, enabling short-distance operation without an overhead power line. This innovation supports sustainable rail transport by providing an eco-friendly solution for last-mile services and shunting operations. The locomotives will use high-voltage lithium-ion battery packs, managed by an intelligent system to optimise charging and discharging.

Development of the battery module was funded under Germany’s federal “Future of Rail Freight Transport” programme, which aims to accelerate rail innovation and enhance logistics efficiency.

JeMyn AG, an affiliate of Widmer Rail Services AG, has placed an order for two Vectron locomotives with battery power modules. The financing was secured early through a structured agreement with Raiffeisen Schweiz Genossenschaft, and delivery is scheduled for 2027.

“We are pleased to expand our collaboration with Widmer Rail Services AG and appreciate their trust in the Vectron platform. The battery power module allows customers to operate across their entire routes electrically, further reducing CO₂ emissions in rail transport,” said Andre Rodenbeck, CEO of Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility.

Pierre Widmer, CEO of Widmer Rail Services AG, highlighted the operational benefits: “The new battery power module makes the Vectron an ideal locomotive for us. It enables more efficient shunting operations without the need for additional shunting locomotives, optimising our processes and reducing costs.”

“We are proud to support sustainable rail transport with our structured financing solution and to assist JeMyn AG and Widmer Rail Services AG in their development,” Peter von Flüe from Raiffeisen Schweiz Genossenschaft added.

The battery module enhances Vectron’s modular design, offering operators greater flexibility even in areas without overhead power lines. By eliminating the need for separate diesel or electric shunting locomotives, the system delivers both economic and environmental benefits, reducing emissions and noise pollution.

With this latest order, Siemens Mobility has now sold over 2,600 Vectron locomotives to 103 customers across 16 countries. The fleet has accumulated more than one billion kilometres in service and holds operational approval in 20 European nations.
