Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) has placed an order for an additional 30 Mireo commuter trains from Siemens Mobility. This procurement is part of an existing framework agreement and follows the purchase of 70 Mireo trains in the previous year, bringing the total number of Mireo trains in ÖBB’s fleet to 100. The new trains are expected to enter passenger service in 2029.
“We are delighted to be supporting ÖBB with now 100 Mireo trains in its program to modernize local and regional rail transport in Austria. Our popular and reliable Mireo trains, of which Siemens Mobility has already sold over 550 trains for 23 fleets, combine high cost-effectiveness and increased fleet efficiency with modern functionalities and a high level of comfort and convenience. Their design contributes to a pleasant travel experience and ultimately satisfied passengers,” Andre Rodenbeck, CEO of Rolling Stock at Siemens Mobility, said.
The ÖBB Mireo trains are designed for efficient and sustainable operation, with a top speed of 160 km/h. These all-electric units are scheduled to operate in Austria, Germany, and the Czech Republic, and are equipped with the European Train Control System (ETCS).
Each train features modern amenities for passengers, including air conditioning, Wi-Fi, barrier-free entrances, power sockets, racks for skis and snowboards, as well as space for baby carriages, wheelchairs, and bicycles. Notably, the new Mireo units for ÖBB will feature wider carriages and a single-car train concept, designed specifically to enhance passenger comfort and convenience.
