Seven more companies accepted as potential bidders for UK franchises

The UK Department of Transport announced that an enlarged total of eighteen companies are now eligible to express an interest in upcoming rail franchises after being granted pre-qualification questionnaire passports (PQQ Passports). The number was thus increased by seven, after eleven firms were selected as eligible in December 2015.
The newly authorized companies are UK-based Metroline Rail Ltd and Amey Rail Ltd, Japanese firms East Japan Railway Co and Mitsui & Company Ltd, Italian company Nuovo Trasporto Viaggiatori, Spanish firm Renfe Viajeros, and French firms SNCF C3 and Transdev PLC.
The PQQ Passports, introduced in 2015, are meant to simplify the rail franchise bidding process, removing the need for companies to complete the resource-intensive sections of the PQQ each time a bidder expresses an interest in taking part in a franchise competition.
