Serbia and Russia sign a new railway contract

The general director of RZD International, Sergey Pavlov, and the acting general director of Serbian Railways Infrastructure, Miroljub Jevtich, signed a EUR 230 million contract for design and construction works on the railway network and for the creation of the Integrated Traffic Control Center. The signing took place during the official visit of the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, to Serbia.
“I think rail will become a key mode of transport in the future. We have big plans ahead. We have signed large agreements and memorandums on the current maintenance of railways.
If we accomplish all this, I am sure that rail will become one of the most profitable modes of transport. Our citizens will appreciate it and be proud of it. These contracts are already worth EUR 230 million and if we organise everything as we started, they will be worth EUR 660 million,” the President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, said during a Russian-Serbian joint press conference.
The contract envisages the construction and modernisation, including the procurement of materials, for the 40,44-km Stara Pazova – Novi Sad section, part of Belgrade – Budapest railway line. Under the contract, a double-track will be constructed. The contract also comprises the construction of the electro-technical infrastructure, engineering facilities and associated objects, power engineering facilities, works on stream regulation and right-of-way arrangement.
When completed, trains will run at speeds of 200 km/h.
As part of the contract, RZD International will draft a project on the reconstruction and modernization of the 210 km railway line between Valjevo, Vrbnica and frontier with Montenegro.
In addition, the company will perform design and construction of the Integrated Traffic Control Center that will be completed within three years.
“Russian Railways is making a significant contribution to the modernisation of Serbia’s railways. With the help of this Russian company, Serbia is now creating an up-to-date single dispatch centre, which will significantly increase the crossing capacity of the country’s transportation network,” the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, said.
It was also signed a Memorandum of Understanding between Russian Railways and Serbian Government under which RZD International will participate in routine maintenance of Serbia’s rail infrastructure facilities. The document is part of the strategic partnership between the two sides for which a Memorandum on railway projects’ implementation was signed in March 2018. The document defines the basic aspects of development of collaboration on the rail transport and joint implementation of railway infrastructure projects with Russian Railways through its subsidiary, RZD International.
Until now, RZD International has been carried out modernization and construction works on Serbian railway network since 2014. The company completed the reconstruction of the Belgrade – Pancevo and Resnik – Valjevo sections under the Corridor X development project and carried out construction of railway tracks on the Jejelev bridge. Also, 27 Russian-made DMUs were delivered to Serbia.
Currently, RZD International is constructing the viaduct in the floodplain of the Danube River and the Chortanovci tunnel, and is reconstructing the Stara Pazova – Novi Sad section for the train speed of 200 km/h.
