São Paulo signs contract for Line 5 extension

Governor of São Paulo signs contract for metro extension to Jardim Ângela. With investments of BRL 3.4 billion (USD 700 million), the project foresees Line 5-Lilac with an additional 4.3 km and 2 new stations, taking the service to the extreme south.

Governor Tarcísio de Freitas signed the amendment to prepare feasibility studies and executive projects for the extension of Line 5-Lilás metro to Jardim Ângela.  The project will have two new stations, Comendador Sant’anna and Jardim Ângela, and will benefit the transport of over 150 thousand people per day with the extended section.

“The other day, I was asked about the most important work for the government in the state. The most important work is the one that makes a difference in people’s lives. This work is an important work, because it will connect Jardim Ângela and the entire South Zone with the rest of the city, and this will improve the lives of thousands of people”, stated the governor. “It is also important because it will generate a lot of jobs. And that’s why we’re going to bring a lot of investments to São Paulo, to generate jobs, to make a difference in people’s lives”, added Tarcísio.

The amendment signing ceremony was attended by the executive secretary of Investment Partnerships, André Isper, as well as deputies, the mayor of São Paulo Ricardo Nunes, councillors and directors of ViaMobilidade, the concessionaire responsible for the operation, maintenance and conservation of the Line 5-Lilac by metro.

The branch will be expanded by another 4.3 km of track, 3.2 km elevated and 1.1 km underground, and will be connected to the existing bus terminal in the region. There will also be a need for road interventions and the construction of a pedestrian walkway. The expectation is that the works will begin in the first quarter of 2025 and be completed with the start of operations in 2028.

The current demand for Line 5-Lilac, which connects Chácara Klabin (Line 2-Green of the Metro) to Capão Redondo, with 17 stations, is more than 507 thousand passengers per day. With the new stations, increasing to a total of 19, the estimate is that the number will reach 650 thousand users per day. The line, which is currently 20 km long, will now be 24.3 km long.

Viability study

The concessionaire will be responsible for carrying out the initial studies for the expansion of the line, reducing the deadline for carrying out the project and the risks related to the execution of the works.

The analysis includes a complete executive project and studies on environmental licensing, demand and use of public and private areas.

USD 35 billion for rail projects in São Paulo

The expansion project for Line 5-Lilac is part of the SP nos Trilhos programme, launched by the Government of the State of São Paulo, and brings together projects for transporting cargo and passengers by rail, such as intercity trains (TIC), light rail vehicles ( VLT), urban trains and metro. In total, the projects are estimated at BRL 194 billion (USD 35 billion) and more than 1,000 km of track length.
