Russian mobile operator MTS has signed a memorandum with Russian Railways to cooperate on developing the telecommunications infrastructure alongside the railway connecting Moscow and St Petersburg. The operator plans to invest around RUB 500 million (USD 7.8 million) in the project. The cooperation will enable broadband and high-quality voice services on trains.
MTS plans to use a hybrid architecture for developing the network. By the end of 2017, base stations will be deployed alongside the route in the Moscow, Tver, Novgorod and St Petersburg regions. Multi-band 900/1800/2100MHz repeaters will be installed on coaches of express trains.
