RZD is looking to modernize Sapsan high-speed trains in 2017 – 2019, the Interfax quotes RZD Senior Vice President Valentin Gapanovich. In particular, permanent-magnet motors will be installed at the trains, which will allow reducing operational costs.
“The annual savings are 3 M kWhr”, Mr. Gapanovich said. “Let us multiply it by 20 years of service. Service is less costly”.
All 16 currently operated trains will be modernized. However, RZD is not planning to buy any more trains. “There are some options. Probably, the situation will get changed with the Moscow – Kazan railway construction but this railway has to be built first”, Mr. Gapanovich said.
