RZD spends USD 450 million for suburban fleet renewal

By the end of this year, RZD planned a RUB 28.7 billion (USD 450 million) investment for a suburban fleet renewal programme. RUB 21.8 billion (USD 341.7 million) will be used for the procurement of Lastochka electric trains in various configurations which will be deployed in St. Petersburg, Republic of Karelia (northwest Russia), Sverdlovsk, Perm and Krasnodar regions. Another RUB 6.9 billion (USD 108.15 million) has been allocated for the acquisition of 17 new EP3D AC train sets (totalling 72 cars) and one 8-car EP2D DC train set to operate in the territory of Zabaykalsky Krai, Voronezh, Lipetsk and Saratov regions. In addition, 8 new RA-3 rail buses from Metrowagonmash will enter services in Nizhny Novgorod and Krasnodar regions. Three such rail buses are expected to be delivered to Sakhalin Island, where the conversion of the gauge, from 1 067 mm narrow gauge to the 1 520 mm broad gauge is carried out. The funds for these vehicles are covered by the Sakhalin Region.
In the first half of 2019, Russian Railways has purchased 23 suburban trains, totalling 117 cars, as part of company’s plan to renew its commuter rolling stock fleet.
Seven EP3D AC electric multiple units with a total of 28 cars were supplied by Transmashholding. They will enter services on South-Eastern and Volga Railways in Voronezh, Lipetsk and Saratov regions.
16 new Lastochka trains totalling 89 cars were also purchased and will enter commercial services in Moscow and St. Petersburg, Moscow, Leningrad and Tver regions.
In addition, RZD also purchased and commissioned 12 new second-class carriages for suburban passenger traffic on Far Eastern and East-Siberian railway network. They will be used on railway routes in Buryatia, Irkutsk and Amur regions.
