Russian railway monopoly RZD plans to lobby the government to deregulate rail tariffs for container transshipment to better compete with ocean shipping and trucking. Deregulating Russian rail transshipment rates could close the gap between ocean and rail pricing by 5 to 7 percent, according to market estimates.
Russian rail tariffs for containers are set by the Russian Ministry of Transport, usually for one year. The tariffs take into consideration the direction and range of a shipment, and the rolling stock used. The Russian government is expected to approve RZD’s request in mid-June.
