Russian Railways is the most energy-efficient and environmentally-friendly railway company in the world, according to International Energy Agency and the International Union of Railways, RZD says.
Since 2015, Russian Railways has been taking part in solving the problems of climate change and its consequences, as well as implementing the Greenhouse Gas Emission Reduction Programme in carrying out its activities.
This year, taking into account indirect emissions from the use of heat and electricity, the company achieved a decrease of 45.7% in greenhouse gas emissions compared to 1990 levels while the traffic volumes remain broadly comparable.
More than 86% of freight and 85% of passengers carried by Russian Railways are transported using environmentally-friendly electric power.
At 30.5%, transport accounts for about one third of all greenhouse gas emissions in Russia. This figure rises to 54.9% when taking into account personal transport.
Russia’s railways account for only about 1% of these emissions.
Between 2011 and 2017, emissions of pollutants into the atmosphere were reduced by 33% and discharges of polluted wastewater into the environment by 54.6%.
