Sinara Transport Machines Holding (STM) and the Russian Railways signed a contract for the supply of 200 2TE5A freight diesel locomotives which will be delivered until 2031. The contract also includes the provisioning of subsequent maintenance services and repair during their life cycle.
The two-sectioned diesel locomotives will be designed with asynchronous traction drive and will operate on the rail network of Far East and East Siberian Railways. The vehicles will be able to drive heavy trains weighing up to 7100 tonnes.
It is planned that the first two 2TE35A locomotives enter trial operation in 2022. The serial production of 2TE35A will be carried out at the Ural Locomotives plant, in Verkhnyaya Pyshma, in the Sverdlovsk Region.
The 2TE35A two-section 16-axle mainline freight diesel locomotive is a completely new locomotive, in which almost every component is being developed in a wide cooperative chain with Russian enterprises, including the 16DM-185T engine.
The diesel locomotive has two power units with a capacity of 3650 kW each and fully meet the environmental requirements of EU Stage IIIA standards.
The TAD430 asynchronous traction the engine installed on the locomotive is manufactured by the Traction Components, a Russian company part of STM.
The 2TE35A was developed by the STM Research Center according to the requirements of Russian Railways. During the development of the locomotive the provisions of the RZD’s Long-Term Development Programme, which lasts until 2025 were also taken into account. One of the main aims of this strategy is to provide for the use of the rolling stock with improved traction characteristics and increased overhaul intervals.
In November 2020, Russian Railways and STM entered into a cooperation agreement to design, manufacture and test, including the supply of maintenance services for 8-axle two-section DC electric locomotives with 2ES6A asynchronous traction drive and mainline freight two-sectioned diesel locomotives with 2TE35A asynchronous traction drive.
