Rwanda-Burundi-Tanzania line is on track

DIKKMWorks for Rwanda-Burundi-Tanzania standard gauge railway proceed according the schedule, Jules Ndenga, the acting special project implementation unit coordinator at the Rwanda’s Ministry of Infrastructure, said.
“Tanzania, Burundi and Rwanda are continuing the joint development of the DIKKM railway project. The recent meeting in Arusha was a joint technical meeting aimed at extending the contract for the transaction advisory services that had expired on December 31, 2015,”  Ndenga said.
The end of the procurement and start of construction would depend on the outcome of the submitted proposals, “tentatively in the second quarter of 2017.”
At the end of March, Rwanda Transport Development Agency announced the updated shortlist of the Request for Expressions of Interest evaluation process. 13 companies and consortia have been shortlisted for the project. China Railway Group, Yapi Merkezi Insaat, Grindrod Rail, China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, AVENG Group in association with Arcus Gibb, Siemens, CTLE, DBSA, KfW, Deutsche Bank and Euler Hermes and Transnet are among the 13 interested groups.
The new line will be constructed from Isaka (Tanzania) to Kigali (Rwanda) and from Keza to Musongati via Gitega in Burundi. In addition, the project involves the modernisation of the existing railway line from Dar es Salaam (DSM) to Isaka. DIKKM railway would follow a 494 km Greenfield alignment to Kigali in Rwanda, with a 197 km branch from Keza to Musongati in Burundi.
