Railway PRO Investment Summit 2015: Romania to launch new railway projects under EU financing

romaniaWithin next moths, Romania will launch new railway projects under EU financing. Brasov-Sighisoara railway line is one of these projects with an estimated total cost of EUR 797.34 million, of which max. EU contribution is EUR 677.74 million. The project is estimated to start in November 2015, and will be finalized in December 2020. Brasov-Sighisoara line is situated on Rhine-Danube Corridor on Romanian territory.
Relating to removal of bottlenecks along the Orient-East Med Corridor, Romania has two railway projects. For the revision of feasibility study and preliminary design of Craiova-Calafat railway line, the requested EU funding is EUR 1.7 million and for feasibility study for the rehabilitation of the Craiova – Drobeta Turnu Severin – Caransebes railway line the requested EU funding is EUR 8.4 million.
In July, the European Commission has adopted the 2014 2020 Large Infrastructure Operational Programme (LIOP) for Romania, which is an important investment package worth nearly EUR 9.5 billion from the EU Regional Funds to be invested in transport, environment and energy projects. This is almost half of the EUR 23 billion allocated to Romania under EU Cohesion Policy. With national co-financing included, it will be worth more than EUR 11.8 billion to stimulate growth and create jobs in the country.
