Romania is the second country after the Czech Republic to buy polish PESA EMU ‘s , as the central European country has a framework contract for 200 units due in 2021. On Tuesday at the Ministry of Transport ARF signed the purchase contract for 62 regional trains, which brings the value of the traction rolling stock purchases made so far to almost 10 billion lei (EUR 2 billion).
The value of the contracts signed so far at the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure for the purchase of new trains is 9.9 billion lei (EUR 2 billion), which means 119 electric trainsets, plus 16 electric locomotives, Romanian minister Sorin Grindeanu said on Tuesday.
“The value of the contracts signed for the purchase of new trains at the Transport Ministry today as we speak is 9.9 billion lei, meaning 119 electric trainsets plus the 16 electric locomotives. This also means another thing – a profound change of the entire fleet of trains in Romania which is absolutely necessary. As I said before, the fact that no new trains have been bought in Romania for more than 20 or so years is evident in terms of the comfort of citizens”, said Grindeanu, at the signing ceremony of the contract for the purchase of 62 regional electric trainsets (RE-R), won by the Polish manufacturer Pojazdy Szynowe Pesa Bydgoszcz Spolka Akcyjna (PESA).
According to him, apart from the hydrogen trains, all other contracts involving the purchase of new rolling stock through the NRRP and the Modernisation Fund have been concluded.
“Today, as we speak, apart from the hydrogen trains, where the tender is not concluded, for all the others that are part of the PNRR and part of what means modernisation funds the contracts have been concluded. These new trains will run on 10 electrified routes” the minister argued.

They are very modern trains, ELF model (electric low floor – ed.) after the initial generations, I and II.
