Romania: Rail connection of Timisoara Airport would cost EUR 5.3 million

Urban train which connects Warsaw Airport and the city center

In perspective of 2021, when Timisoara will be the European Capital of Culture, USR (one of the Romanian opposition parties) launched a collaboration proposal to local and county authorities to develop a modern project: the rail connection of Timisoara Airport.

Under the project, the estimated implementation period will be 12-16 months and the cost of investments will reach RON 25 million (EUR 5.3 million). “The objective is to develop a transport alternative such as an urban train to provide easy access between the city and Traian Vuia International Airport. Connection could be made between the existing 213 rail route (Timisoara – Lipova) and Timisoara International Airport”.

This connection would require the development of a rail segment on a 1.5-km line, a segment which, initially, could also be non-electrified. For the project to be completed at the end of 2020, at the latest, first investments should be allocated as early as this year and concrete project implementation measures should be undergone. This draft project is also included in Timisoara General Urban Plan, as well as in Vision 2030 project, developed by Timisoara City Hall.

Currently, the airport is only accessible by road. Traffic congestion would be significantly reduced by connecting the airport to the railway network.
