Romania: Green light to continue financing the rehabilitation of Coşlariu – Simeria and Sighisoara – Coşlariu rail sections

Infrastructura RomaniaThe European Commission communicated the decisions to continue financing, in the current programing period (phase II), two rail infrastructure rehabilitation projects, Coşlariu – Simeria and Sighişoara – Coşlariu, in Romania, included in the major project “Rehabilitation of Braşov – Simeria Railway”, part of the pan-European Corridor IV (northern branch) for the traffic of trains at a speed of 160km/h.

The general objective of the rehabilitation of Coşlariu – Simeria (74.341 km) and Sighişoara – Coşlariu (99.04 km) rail sections is to ensure rail infrastructure rehabilitation along the pan-European Corridor IV (northern branch), the improvement of rail transport quality by upgrading the rail infrastructure and superstructure and the traffic speed to 160 km/h for passenger trains and to 120 km/h for freight trains and the introduction of the ERTMS/ETCS Level 2 system.

According to CFR SA, the costs for the rehabilitation of the two railway sections is RON 981 million (EUR 218 million).

The projects located in the development regions from Western and Central Romania, in Alba, Hunedoara, Mureş and Sibiu counties, have been divided in two financing phases – phase I, co-financed by the EU in the 2007-2013 period and phase II, implemented in the programming period 2014-2020. The estimated deadline of these rail sections is 2018.

“At the moment, we are developing complex rehabilitation and modernisation projects on the whole network, and the construction companies should join the company’s efforts in developing the rail infrastructure by committing to observe the jointly-set deadlines and to keep the same pace in project implementation as last year. It is technically possible, will is all we need, as well as to raise awareness on the efforts made by CFR SA and the Ministry of Transport to support rail infrastructure development”, declared Marius Chiper, CFR SA’s General Manager.
