Riga’s public transport company, Rīgas satiksme, will announce again, in the coming months, two tenders for the reconstruction and development of tramway infrastructure and the acquisition of 20 new trams. The decision is the result of the recent suspension of the tenders, both being in advanced stage: the development of city’s tram infrastructure was in “closed contest” phase and the acquisition of new low-floor trams was at a negotiated procedure phase.
Prior to starting the new negotiated procedure, Rīgas satiksme also plans to review the procurement documentation by revising requirements to applicants and thus increasing the number of potential applicants to the extent possible.
Prior to announcing the procurement, all its documentation is pre-examined by the Procurement Monitoring Bureau, as provided for by the law. The procurement commission of Rīgas satiksme also actively cooperates with Delna Society for Transparency under the project supervision agreement (Integrity Pact).
Riga’s tramway network has a total length of 124 km served by 242 stops. The company owns 189 trams, including 26 low-floor vehicles. In 2016, the city awarded Škoda Transportation a contract for the supply 20 low-floor trams of which 15 three-section and 5 four-section trams. Every year trams in Riga carry 34 million passengers on the average.
