Škoda Transportation announced that it has won the tender for the supply of 80 trams to Rhine Neckar Transport (RNV), with an option for 34 additional vehicles. The value of the contract is EUR 250 million. The new trams will be put into commercial operation of tram networks in and around around Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg.
Škoda Transportation will supply three tram lengths with the same technical design, envisaging three-carriage, four-carriage and six-carriage each. Under the contract, 31 thirty-meter trams, 37 forty-meter trams and 12 sixty-meter trams will be delivered. The vehicles will also provide barrier-free access for customers with restricted mobility.
All trams are bi-directional low-floor with all motorized pivoting bogies and a 1000 mm gauge. The vehicles will be equipped with modern information systems and camera systems. The maximum vehicle operating speed will be 80 km/h.
The acquisition contract is part of Rhein-Neckar- 2020 project to improve tramway transport system. The operator intends to replace 45% of its old tram fleet and to increase its transport capacity.
The new vehicles will contribute to competitiveness and attractiveness of public transport and will bring maintenance cost savings and other benefits such as improved noise and emission levels.
