„Infrastructure renewal, the development of transit business to Latvian ports, the development of passenger transport and local freight transport and most of all the development of project Rail Baltica are among the basic strategies of Latvian railway development”, Dins Merirands, Deputy State Secretary – Latvian Ministry of Transport highlighted in his presentation on attending the Railway PRO Investment Summit – Building the new CEE Railway Economy, organised in Bucharest, 6 – 7 October, by Club Feroviar with the support of the Romanian Railway Industry Association (AIF).
The construction of second track in section Skrīveri – Krustpils – EUR 93.4 mln, the reconstruction of existing rail track in Rail Baltica corridor – EUR 43.4 mln, the construction of station Bolderāja II with access line to terminals in Krievu sala – EUR 45.6 mln and the reconstruction of signaling, telecommunication and power supply systems in section Zasulauks – Bolderāja I – EUR 15.4 mln are the main recent rail infrastructure development projects completed inn Latvia.
The electrification of East – West rail corridor, 25 kV AC with 2016 – 2022 as a time frame, the implementation of ERTMS with 2017 – 2021 time frame, the reconstruction of Riga and Daugavpils railway junctions estimated for completion between 2016 – 2020 and the modernization of passenger service infrastructure, estimated for completion for 2017 – 2019 are the main upcoming infrastructure development projects of Latvian Railways (LDZ).
Another important project that Latvia wishes to promote and develop is the Baltic transit, more than that the country plans to be a railway platform between Europe and China by establishing a rail connection with Urumqi city and Xinjiang region. Also, Latvian Railways plan to better develop the distribution in the Baltics and Scandinavia.
As for the rolling stock development projects, „DMU vilcieni” company modernises 19 new diesel coaches for the state owned passenger railway undertaking „Pasažieru vilciens” AS.
The same passenger railway undertaking „Pasažieru vilciens” AS has launched a new electric train procurement. The deadline to submit the tender is 30 October 2015.
