Railpool completes ETCS Baseline 3 upgrades in Scandinavia

Railpool has successfully completed the upgrade of its locomotives in Scandinavia to the European Train Control System (ETCS) Baseline Version 3.4. This milestone ensures the continued viability and future-proofing of Railpool’s fleet.

The company operates 60 electric locomotives across Scandinavia, with 40 of these vehicles undergoing conversion to the new ETCS standard in collaboration with Alstom and BS Verkstäder. The upgraded fleet includes 32 Traxx 2 AC locomotives and 8 Traxx 3 AC locomotives. Additionally, Railpool has purchased 20 Traxx 3 AC locomotives in the past two years, all of which are already equipped with the latest ETCS system.

By upgrading our locomotives, we are ensuring that they can continue to operate across the entire Scandinavian rail network in the future. Railpool continues to be a full-service provider, offering locomotive rental along with workshop services and a dedicated spare parts inventory to ensure maximum vehicle availability. To strengthen its services in Scandinavia, the company has also acquired the NTT workshops in Oslo, Malmö, and Gothenburg, further solidifying its presence in the region.

The upgrade was partially funded by the European Union under the Connecting Europe Facility (CEF) for the European Rail Traffic Management System, with support provided for both 2021 and 2023.
