U.S. Transportation and Infrastructure Committee introduced bipartisan legislation to extend the deadline for railway companies to implement Positive Train Control technology. The bill extends the deadline to fully implement the technology to the end of 2018.
Congress mandated that freight railroad lines carrying certain toxic materials, passenger railroads, and commuter operators implement PTC by December 31, 2015, but most freight and commuter companies have reported that they will not be able to meet the deadline, and require more time to complete implementation.
Without an extension, freight operators will be forced to suspend shipments of certain chemicals and commuter companies will need to cease operations, significantly impacting commutes in major metropolitan regions and all Amtrak service outside of portions of the Northeast Corridor will be suspended.
