ProRail expands its Hoofddorp stabling yard

Hoofddorp stabling yard

Works for the expansion of Hoofddorp stabling yard are carried out according to the schedule with Dura Vermeer Railinfra installing the new tracks to increase the capacity of the facility.

The expansion of the sidings is necessary so that it is providing sufficient space to park trains with an estimated future capacity to accommodate additional 50 passenger railcars. For this expansion, the old NS (Nederlandse Spoorwegen) service building had to be moved.

The overhead line portals were installed in March and April, an important step in the project. Four new tracks were subsequently constructed in May and June, including the necessary service paths, but currently they are not in use. In addition, three new switches have been placed.

In the coming period, Dura Vermeer Railinfra will be focused on laying cables and pipes as well as the overhead lines which need to be installed. “During the train-free period from September 27 to 29, the connecting switch will be installed so that the tracks can be put into service. If everything goes according to plan, the remaining work for Dura Vermeer will be completed in December 2024,” Renske Snels, construction manager at ProRail, said.

In addition to the technical work, ProRail also pays attention to sustainability. As soon as the railway work is completed, the Dutch rail infrastructure manager will optimally organise the site ecologically.

A detailed ecological plan has been drawn up that provides for the construction of a water hole and a nature-friendly bank along the Kagertocht. New trees and plants are also being planted to promote biodiversity.

The contractor Wallaard will be working on constructing this for ProRail until April next year.

With this approach ProRail not only ensures more efficient use of the railway, but we also contribute to a greener environment. The project at the Hoofddorp stabling yard is an example that “at ProRail are working on a sustainable and future-proof infrastructure,” the rail infrastructure manager says.
