The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa (PRASA) has signed a memorandum of understanding with China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) to jointly explore various infrastructure development initiatives.
One of the key projects highlighted for possible development by PRASA and CCCC is the Moloto Rail Corridor Project. The project proposes to construct a commuter line that will link Gauteng and Mpumalanga. The Moloto Transport Corridor currently runs from Siyabuswa, through KwaMhlanga to Tshwane and carries approximately 40,000 passengers per day.
“The construction of the rail development corridor is a direct response by government to excessive traffic congestion numerous fatal road accidents and general economic underdevelopment in the area,” spokesperson of SA Presidency Bongani Ngqulunga said.
According to PRASA, the project will involve the construction of 13 new train stations, of 117 km double track, a new 67 km of double track from Siyabuswa to Moloto and the alignment of Mamelodi East and Greenview Pienaarspoort.
