Portugal’s infrastructure authority Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP) has announced that two main sections of the southern region Algarve’s railway network are to be electrified by the end of 2020. The works are slated to start in 2018 or 2019; however a series of studies still have to be completed before the project begins.
“If it is decided that an environmental impact study is not needed, then the works should be launched this year,” IP vice-president Carlos Fernandes said. The works could be delayed by six months if the study is deemed necessary, he added.
The works will take place on the railway stretches between Lagos and Tunes (45 km) and between Faro and Vila Real de Santo António (56 km). The project will cost around EUR 57 million, 85% of which will be covered by community funding.
