More than 40 000 people have used the trial 24-hour weekend metro in Porto since it began operating last month, city officials say.
Designed as a way to cut car traffic in the city centre and also to reduce drink-driving, the trial will run until the end of October on lines A and D, with services throughout the night on Friday, Saturday and on public holidays.
The city is reportedly pleased with the passenger numbers and revenue from tickets. In the first month of the trial EUR 28 000 has been collected in ticket sales, more than covering the EUR 20 000 cost of running the service.
