The Portuguese government has announced it will allocate a total of EUR 546 million for the extension of the Lisbon and Porto metro networks, the Cascais railway line and the “Mondego” mobility system.
Of the total amount, the allocation of EUR 285 million has already been announced. The money will come from the rescheduling of Portugal 2020, a financial reprogramming for which the Lisbon government has requested approval from the European Commission.
Thus, the investment will be available to improve the heavy and light rail system in the Coimbra region.
In addition, the Portuguese government hopes that financial support from the European Union, as well as through bank loans, will be able to allocate EUR 2.93 billion to the relaunch of Portugal 2020 program. Most of these funds will be directed to the heavy rail transport system, for passengers, and sustainable urban mobility, but the latter will be financially supported only if it involves the development of urban railway projects (light rail, metro, etc.).
Innovation is also among the areas benefiting from financial incentives.
