Poland to reconstruct the rail link with Slovakia

Polish railway infrastructure manager, PKP PLK, has started the design works on the revitalization of the Nowy Zagórz – Łupków railway line, towards Slovakia. Plans for tracks and switches, reconstruction of stations and stops as well as replacement of bridges and viaducts will be prepared. The documentation that will allow you to precisely plan the works will be ready in 2022.
In December, PKP PLK and a consortium led by IDOM Inżynieria, Architektura i Doradztwo* signed a contract for the development of project documentation together with elements of pre-project documentation and supervision for the project. The consortium has until half of 2022 to complete the task.
The preparation of the feasibility study will allow the commencement of reconstruction of a 50 km railway line connecting the Nowy Zagórz station with the Łupków station through the Bieszczady Mountains on the Polish-Slovak border. Currently, the single-track line is used for passenger transport on the Gdynia Główna – Łupków, Zagórz – Komańcza, Rzeszów – Medzilaborce (Slovakia) routes.
The line revitalization is planned until 2027. The project is to be prepared so that passenger trains can travel at 80 km/h and freight trains at 50 km/h. This is the speed at which a mountain line was built. The possibilities will also be tested to increase the train speeds.
The project will also cover 128 engineering facilities, by reconstructing 26 bridges, 13 viaducts and one railway tunnel and modernising the 40 level crossings.
Under the project, platforms will be reconstructed and modernised at five stations and nine stops. In addition, they will be fully accessible for passengers with reduced mobility.
The project is included in the Regional Operational Program of the Podkarpackie Voivodeship.

*The consortium comprises Idom Inżynieria, Architektura i Doradztwo, Idom Consulting, Engineering, Architecture S.A.U. and HIQE.
