Poland awards GSM-R integration contract

Polish GSM-R network

PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe (PKP PLK) has signed a key agreement with Nokia Solutions and Networks sp. z o.o. to deliver and install the technology for the integration of Polish GSM-R network. The contract is expected to be completed in 13 months.

In accordance with the provisions of the contract, the selected companies will be responsible for the necessary software updates and reconfiguration of the radio subnetwork in order to integrate it with the new central unit, delivered as part of the national project to implement the GSM-R network.

Nokia Solutions and Networks sp. z o.o. is the second partner for the Polish GSM-R rail network, as an agreement was previously signed with a consortium consisting of Kontron Transportation (Poland) and Kontron Transportation GmbH.

Joint actions will result in the creation of a uniform and harmonised GSM-R network, which will integrate the existing telecommunications infrastructure on the lines:

  • Opole – Wrocław (line 132);
  • Wrocław – Legnica (line 275);
  • Legnica – Węgliniec (line 282);
  • Węgliniec – Bielawa Dolna (line 295);
  • Warszawa Wschodnia – Terespol (line 2);
  • Kunowice – Warszawa Zachodnia (line 3);
  • Skierniewice – Łowicz Główny (line 11);
  • Skierniewice – Łuków (line 12);
  • Warszawa Wschodnia – Gdańsk Główny (line 9);
  • Gdańsk Główny – Gdynia Gówna (line 202);
  • Warszawa Zachodnia – Koluszki (line 1); and
  • Łódź Widzew – Koluszki (line 17).

The companies will also deploy their technology in the future – with the infrastructure built as part of the project “Construction of the ERTMS/GSM-R system infrastructure on the railway lines of PKP Polskie Linie Kolejowe within the framework of NPW ERTMS”.

The first effect of the work will be to enable the launch of GSM-R voice communication on the railway line connecting Warsaw with the Tri-City (lk9), which is planned to be carried out with carriers in the third quarter of 2025. Observed operation consists of testing and monitoring the new system in real conditions in order to gather experience and ensure its safe implementation. This will allow for testing of all operational scenarios in which GSM-R communication will be used for communication between PLK SA traffic controllers and drivers driving carrier trains, as well as between PLK SA employees and carrier employees (e.g. conductor teams).

The experience gathered will influence the final shape of the instructions and regulations adopted by PLK SA and rail operators. After the observed operation is completed, voice communication in the GSM-R network will be made available for use on the remaining railway lines covered by the project.
