In 2024, PKP Intercity trains transported 78,5 million passengers, representing an increase of 15% compared to the precedent year and 33% more compared to 2022.
Last year, more passengers used long-distance transport each month than in previous years. In December, 6.6 million people travelled on board PKP Intercity trains, which is 12% more than in 2023.
In the first quarter of 2024, PKP Intercity transported 16.7 million passengers, which is almost 22% more than in the same period in 2023. The state-owned operator also recorded very good results in Spring, with a 18% increase in April (when transported 6.2 million passengers), and a 26% increase was observed in May (reaching 7 million passengers), compared to the same month of 2023.
The growing trend in the number of passengers was also maintained after the end of the summer season when the largest increase, of 13% was recorded in November (6.2 million), followed by October, when 6.3 million passengers used PKP Intercity trains with an increase of 7%.
In 2025, the number of passengers transported will increase thanks to the new timetable, which was introduced at the end of 2024. In the new timetable, an average of 505 trains will run on the tracks every day, which is 51 more than in the previous one. Thanks to this, PKP Intercity’s offer has increased by almost 12%.
Along with better and fast services on a modernised rail network, one of the main driver of this increase is company’s rolling stock renewal programme, the largest one in its history with an investment of PLN 27 billion (EUR 6.3 billion). The company is continuing its schedules to acquire new multiple units, locomotives and railcars, as well as modernising its existing fleet.
This fleet stock renewal program forms the foundation of the strategy to attract more passengers to sustainable transport. PKP Intercity’s plan aims to achieve a target of 88 million passengers transported by 2030.
