PKP Intercity announced plans to modernise 400 carriages, 60 locomotives, as well as renovate and build a new service depot to upkeep its fleet for PLN 1.8 billion (EUR 404 milion). The new carriages will start travelling on national and international lines, for example Berlin-Poznań-Warsaw, in 2018.
Sixty locomotives will receive heightened safety features, cost effective features lowering maintenance costs, and an increase in speeds from 125 km/h to 160 km/h.
PKP Intercity plans to spend PLN one billion (EUR 224.5 million) of its own funds as well as EU funding for the project.
Following the introduction of its new Stadler/Newag Flirt and Pesa Dart EMUs at the end of December 2015, PKP Intercity has confirmed its fleet upgrade programme will continue with the modernisation of seven electric locomotives and 60 coaches together with the upgrading of maintenance facilities.
The passenger coaches modernisation contracts are divided into four lots. Closing dates for submission of bids are between February 10 and February 15. The submission date for the electric locomotive contract is February 16. The work is due to be completed by 2018.
