PKP Intercity and H. Cegielski – Fabryka Pojazdów Szynowych signed a PLN 90 million (EUR 21.12 million) contract to rebuild of 13 SM42 diesel locomotives.
Under the tender procedure, the H Cegielski offer had a value of PLN 6.95 million (EUR 1.63 million) for the repair and modernization of one locomotive.
The locomotives will benefit from modern diesel engines that meet the EU III B Stage emission standards, reducing the noise and vibration level. The locomotives will be equipped with microprocessor control and traction systems which will improve the performance and reduce the fuel consumption. After modernisation, the operational safety of locomotives and their reliability will be improved, and the operating costs will be significantly reduced. Planned works will also contribute to the comfort of drivers’ work.
The modernised locomotives will be used primarily used for shunting activities, but they also can be used to operate seasonal transport services on non-electrified routes.
The contract is funded through the Operational Program Infrastructure and Environment 2014 – 2020, under the project for the modernisation of PKP Intercity’s railcars and locomotives. In 2018, the Polish operator and the Centre for European Union Transport Projects – CUPT signed a contract for the implementation of rolling stock renewal projects. The EU funds are essential for the operator’s largest investment programme on the modernisation and procurement of new rolling stock. The value of the investment is PLN 7 billion (EUR 1.65 billion) by 2023.
