PKP Intercity has received two more modern Griffin locomotives delivered by Newag under a contract signed in March 2023 for the supply of 20 electric locomotives. PLN 551.4 million (EUR 129 million) is the value of the contract.
The Polish long distance rail operator says that the delivery was accelerated thanks to negotiations conducted with the manufacturer in May this year while the acceptance is underway.
From then until the end of July, PKP Intercity has accepted 11 more Griffin locomotives, including two in recent days. The final acceptance of the new locomotives was preceded by factory acceptances, including stationary and movement tests, in particular focusing on checking the functioning of safety systems and testing the quality of workmanship. The acceptance of two more Griffins is planned for the end of August.
Two new modern Griffin locomotives will be used for passenger services especially during the summer holidays. This is particularly important during the seasonal peak season, when the largest number of passengers travel on PKP Intercity trains. The company’s transport results indicate that 7.1 million people used the carrier’s services in June, and an estimated 7.8 million in July. On July 14, the daily record for the number of passengers transported was also broken, reaching 282.5 thousand people.
The new locomotives will be used on domestic connections and will serve the most popular routes to Wrocław, Poznań, Gdynia, Olsztyn, Szczecin, Kraków, Katowice, Zielona Góra and Białystok.
They are designed to reach a speed of 160 km/h and they will replace the older generation locomotives that reach a speed of 125 km/h.
The new locomotives are equipped with the ETCS level L1 and L2 safety system and equipment that increases the level of vehicle safety also includes on-board diagnostic systems, video monitoring and a fire alarm system. The locomotives also have GPS transmitters.
