PKP Intercity has expanded its fleet with the delivery of three additional NEWAG Griffin EU160 series locomotives, each capable of reaching speeds of up to 160 km/h. These locomotives are part of a larger contract for 46 vehicles, and bring the total number of Griffin locomotives in the carrier’s fleet to 58.
The latest locomotives, manufactured at the NEWAG SA factory in Nowy Sącz, were delivered to PKP Intercity’s Central Plant in Warsaw. They will be gradually incorporated into the timetable and will serve routes including Warsaw – Wrocław and Warsaw – Białystok. The full delivery of the 46 locomotives is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, bringing the total fleet of Griffin EU160 series locomotives to 96.
In addition to the Griffin locomotives, NEWAG SA is fulfilling two other significant orders for PKP Intercity. One order includes the delivery of 63 multi-system locomotives capable of speeds of 200 km/h, with an option for an additional 32 units. The second order involves the production of 35 dual-drive multiple units. Together, these ongoing contracts with NEWAG SA are valued at PLN 7.7 billion gross (EUR 1.83 billion).
PKP Intercity has also contracted additional rolling stock projects with Polish manufacturers and repair plants, totaling approximately PLN 16.5 billion (EUR 3.9 billion).
The purchase of the 46 EU160 locomotives is supported by EU funds from the National Recovery and Resilience Plan (KPO). In October 2024, PKP Intercity signed an agreement with the Center for EU Transport Projects (CUPT) for non-refundable support amounting to PLN 2.162 billion (EUR 498 million) from the KPO. The funding will cover over 94% of the eligible costs, with the total expenditure for the locomotives and modernization of wagons reaching PLN 2.297 billion (EUR 522 million). The completion of all projects is required by mid-2026 to meet the terms of the EU grant.
