PKP Intercity awards hybrid train fleet contract

electro-diesel multiple unitsPKP Intercity decided to award the contract for the supply of 35 electro-diesel multiple units to Newag, which was the single bidder in the procurement procedure. The first two trainsets will be handed over to PKP Intercity 30 months after signing the contract with Newag.According to the order, the contractor guarantees the maintenance of the vehicles for 10 years of use, which will be provided with the participation of the carrier’s employees.

Newag submitted an offer of PLN 3.36 billion (EUR 788.3 million), PLN 2.5 million (EUR 586,795) less than the budget allocated by PKP Intercity at a value of EUR 789 million.

“In line with the new development direction of PKP Intercity, we want to expand our rolling stock to include as many combined vehicles as possible. Currently, the company has nearly 90 electric multiple units. The tender concluded today for the supply of 35 hybrid multiple units will allow us to ensure not only passenger comfort but also optimise operating costs in the company,” says Janusz Malinowski, president of the management board of PKP Intercity.

The new electro-diesel multiple units will provide a capacity of 178 passengers, with 154 seats in second class and 20 in first class. The vehicles will be equipped with 4 seats for people with disabilities and their caregivers. The vehicles will have 8 bicycle racks. Additionally, passengers will be able to take advantage of the gastronomic offer available from vending machines.

“Efficient resolution of this order will certainly allow us to raise the standard of PKP Intercity’s offer and improve the efficiency of the rolling stock in use, especially in the context of servicing non-electrified lines. The project was not adequately prepared for maintenance. We are in talks with the manufacturer and are looking for our own solutions to provide appropriate facilities for these vehicles,” Adam Wawrzyniak, member of the management board of PKP Intercity, said.

The new electro-diesel multiple units will run on domestic connections in the InterCity category, which will shorten travel times for trains currently operated by electric and diesel locomotives. They will be equipped with the ETCS and internal combustion engines meeting the latest exhaust emission standards.

These electro-diesel multiple units are the first one in PKP Intercity’s rolling stock.
