Philippines authorities will launch in the fourth quarter of this year the construction of Manila- Malolos railway line, as part of the North–South Commuter Railway Project.
The project is financed by Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) and involves the construction of a 38 km commuter line running from Malolos, the capital city of Bulacan Province north of Metro Manila, to Tutuban in the City of Manila. The loan funds are allocated to civil works, including elevated railway tracks, station buildings and a depot, to the procurement of electrical and mechanical systems and rolling stock, and to consulting services. Special Terms for Economic Partnership (STEP) will be applied to this project, and it is expected that Japanese technology such as construction techniques for elevated railways, efficient signal systems and rolling stock will be utilized.
On November 27, JICA signed the loan agreement with the Government of Philippines to provide a Japanese ODA loan of up to JPY 241.991 billion (EUR 1.97 billion) for the North – South Commuter railway project (Malolos – Tutuban).
The project will be completed at the end of 2021, when the facilities will be put into service.
