Peru’s government is evaluating a 600-km railway project to transport mineral concentrates from a copper-rich region in the Andes to the Pacific coast for export, according to the deputy Mining minister. The project is valued at USD 2.4 billion.
The proposed railway would carry concentrates from Chinese-owned MMG’s Las Bambas mine and other copper and iron projects planned in the future, including Southern Copper’s Los Chancas, First Quantum Minerals’ Haquira and Buenaventura’s Trapiche.
Rail transport could appease the farming communities in the Andes that have complained about dust and noise created by diesel trucks that transport MMG’s copper over unpaved roads.
