Osaka’s municipal metro system was privatized on 1 April with the launch of the new operator, Osaka Metro Co., marking the first privatization of a public metro network in Japan. Osaka Metro will take control of metro operations from the Osaka Municipal Transportation Bureau. All shares in the new company are owned by the Osaka Municipal Government.
Hideaki Kawai, a former executive of Panasonic Corp., will be the first president of the company. “We’ll work to offer metro services with supreme safety,” Hideaki Kawai said.
“I want Osaka Metro to grow to become the top private railway company” in the Kansai western Japan region, including Osaka Prefecture, Osaka Mayor Hirofumi Yoshimura said.
