The ÖBB Rail Cargo Group (RCG) is launching TransFLEX, a new product for more flexibility in rail freight transport.
The solution is aimed at meeting individual customer needs with optimal order flexibility.
With TransFLEX, RCG is expanding its wide product range of TransFER connections and individual solutions.
“Those who choose TransFLEX get even more flexibility in terms of timing, quantity and relation. This enables uncomplicated ad hoc or spot traffic as well as multimodal solutions including truck pre- and on-carriage and value-added services,” emphasizes Christoph Grasl, CEO of RCG, adding: “As the sustainable logistics backbone of the European economy, we are thus responding to our customers’ wishes to expand our product portfolio.”
TransFLEX pilot program in Germany
In September 2022, RCG started the pilot project in Germany with two locomotives in order to establish a flexible ad hoc solution in the volatile market in addition to regular TransFER connections with a fixed timetable.
The number of locomotives has now grown from two to 15. In 2023 alone, there were around 2,300 TransFLEX connections, 2.45 million tons transported and 1.28 million kilometers of rail traveled.
The block trains mainly travel within Germany, but also across the border to Austria.
“TransFLEX has established itself as the ideal solution, particularly for customers in the chemical and mineral oil industries – especially when things need to go faster. In the future, however, the service can also be expanded to include other industries”, the company says.
The Rail Cargo Group is a prominent rail logistics provider in Europe, operating 24/7 across 18 countries. With a dedicated team of 5,912 logistics professionals, RCG manages 419,000 trains annually, transporting over 78 million net tonnes of freight each year. The group’s operations are managed by Rail Cargo Austria AG.
