ÖBB improves connection with Switzerland

ÖBB is announcing maintenance and modernization work between Feldkirch and Buchs this summer.

The section of the line between Feldkirch in Austria and Buchs in Switzerland is only around 18 kilometers long, but is of particular importance for international rail traffic. International long-distance passenger traffic (Vienna or Graz – Zurich), cross-border local passenger traffic (Feldkirch – Buchs) and freight traffic run over the single-track section from Austria via Liechtenstein to Switzerland.

In order to make the railway line fit for the future and increase comfort, ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG is implementing extensive infrastructure measures this summer and in 2026. At the same time, train stations and stops are being renovated or, in the case of the Feldkirch-Tosters stop, completely rebuilt. Due to the extent of the construction work in three countries, spread over the entire route, these will be implemented in two phases.

For passengers, this means two longer line closures, this summer and in 2026. This makes it possible for the work to be bundled and carried out in tight time windows so that the connection can then be made available again in good quality. All partners involved emphasize the added value of the extensive structural route update:

“The planned cross-border construction work on the rail connection between Feldkirch and Buchs is an enormous challenge for ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG. The aim is to connect Vorarlberg and thus Austria with Liechtenstein and Switzerland in a modern and reliable way. A modern rail infrastructure is the backbone of the dynamic economic area. The people in the region benefit equally from attractive local and long-distance transport offers,” says Board Director Judith Engel, ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG.

Feldkirch and Buchs works in detail

The planned measures include a variety of maintenance work as well as the modernization or construction of new stops and the renewal of bridge structures. In the Austrian section of the route, the platforms at the Gisingen and Altenstadt stops will be extended to 120 meters and the platform equipment renewed. While the Tisis stop will be closed and dismantled, a new stop “Feldkirch-Tosters” will be built as a replacement in a new location with two edge platforms, an underpass, an attractive forecourt and a bike+ride facility.

Stations on the Liechtenstein side are also being modernized. Nendeln and Schaan-Vaduz will get longer platforms. In the Nendeln station area, investments are also planned in the track infrastructure and railway technology for modern and safe train operations, such as the construction of a new electronic signal box into which the control of eight railway crossings will be integrated.

Both in Liechtenstein and further afield in Switzerland, the renewal and renovation of bridge structures is the focus of the work. These include the renewal of the supporting structures over the large and small Liechtenstein inland canals, corrosion protection for the Buchs Rhine bridge, the new construction of the foreland supporting structure of the Rhine bridge, the Werdenberg inland canal and the three-pillar bridge (flood bridge).

In addition, new tracks and switches, the renewal of culverts and cable work are planned. A total of EUR 100 million will be invested in the extensive maintenance and modernization program in 2024 and 2026. Project partners are the state of Vorarlberg, the city of Feldkirch, Liechtenstein and the municipalities of Eschen-Nendeln and Schaan.

The construction work will be carried out in sections not only during the day but also at night. The ÖBB tries to keep disruption to residents as low as possible. Nevertheless, due to the nature and extent of the work, nuisance from noise, dust, light and construction site traffic is to be expected. Acoustic warning signals are also required to protect workers. The ÖBB asks for your understanding. Despite the line closure, rail-bound construction vehicles can be expected in the track area at any time.

Changes for rail passengers – rail replacement services and diversions

From August 10 to September 9, 2024, the railway line between Feldkirch and Buchs will be closed due to the planned work. For local transport between Feldkirch and Buchs, a rail replacement service (SEV) with buses will be set up during this time.

The SEV stops will sometimes differ from the train stops. The long-distance trains from/to Zurich will partly be diverted via St. Margrethen, and partly also by bus from Feldkirch to Buchs or Sargans.

In Sargans, passengers can change to SBB long-distance trains. The ÖBB asks customers for their understanding of the necessary measures and recommends that they find out about the desired connection in advance. The ÖBB will provide timely information about further construction work in the coming project phases.
