ÖBB has completed the modernisation and renewal of Wartberg station in Sankt Barbara im Mürztal town, located in Styria.
The completely barrier-free station also benefits a bridge that replaces the previously existing railway crossing directly in the station which has significantly changed the visual character of the entire facility.
“The expansion of the Vienna-Villach southern route is the heart of the transport transition in the south and is therefore a key investment focus. We want to make rail travel more attractive than driving in the south, so that even more people will switch to rail and public transport in the future. Wartberg station is now finished, and a historic milestone will follow next year with the Koralmbahn,” Christina Rebernik, Head of ÖBB-Infrastruktur said.
In addition to the complete reconstruction of the railway facilities and the crossing bridge into the Scheibsgraben, a new park & ride facility with 18 car spaces, 20 bicycle and 10 motorcycle parking spaces and one of which is for people with reduced mobility was created. The connection of the station to the regional bus service was also significantly improved by the redesign of the stops and the access to the station. As part of the project, the noise protection walls were also extended from Mitterdorf to Wartberg and thus completely completed in this area.
“Wartberg station is another building in the important modernisation of the railway in Styria. Whether it is the Koralmbahn, which will be operational in 2025, the Semmering Base Tunnel or many other large and small projects: we need a modern, future-proof infrastructure. Now it is still a matter of creating the best future prospects for the transport infrastructure of the Styrian people,” Christopher Drexler, Governor of Styria said.
The investments in Wartberg are part of the historic expansion of the Southern route Vienna – Villach.
ÖBB-Infrastruktur is currently working on more than 100 large and small projects along the Southern route, part of the Baltic-Adriatic corridor. Part of the project, 200 km of railway line are being modernised, and 170 km of new track are being laid and 80 km of new tunnels and 150 new bridges are being built.
Once the projects are completed, in 2030, trains will run from Vienna to Klagenfurt in 2 hours 40 minutes, and from Graz to Klagenfurt in 45 minutes
They cross many new stations over a total of 470 km and cross two mountains, the Semmering and the Koralpe, at high speeds. Overall, the new Southern route creates the conditions for future-oriented, modern passenger and freight transport.
