ÖBB completes regional train fleet refurbishment

Public transport in Upper Austria continues to improve in quality. The state of Upper Austria, together with the Upper Austria Transport Association and the transport companies, is implementing numerous measures to ensure that passengers can get from A to B even more comfortably. 40 ÖBB regional trains trains received interior and exterior upgrades.

With the refurbishment of the ÖBB regional trains, an important component of the transport service contract concluded with the ÖBB in 2019 has now been finally implemented. With the completion of the qualitative upgrade of the last outstanding train, the entire existing local transport fleet has now been brought up to date. All trains are also designed in the OÖVV and ÖBB co-branding.

Thanks to the upgrade, passengers in Upper Austria now enjoy even more travel comfort. Investments in the quality and comfort of public transport, along with many other improvements and optimizations in local public transport, are important building blocks for convincing even more people of the benefits of sustainable mobility offers.

It is particularly pleasing that passengers also appreciate optimisations and improvements such as these. This is demonstrated not least by the fact that in 2023 more passengers than ever before used public transport in Upper Austria for their daily journeys.

ÖBB aims to invest around EUR 6.1 billion by 2030

In order to ensure that passengers continue to enjoy a comfortable and safe travel experience in the future, ÖBB is continually investing in its fleet. By 2030, around EUR 6.1 billion will be invested in expanding and modernising the train service throughout Austria. A large part of this will go towards new trains: EUR 1.6 billion for long-distance transport and EUR 3.7 billion for local transport.

EUR 0.8 billion will be used to rebuild and modernise vehicles already in use. It is important to keep the trains up to date and to meet modern requirements, for both in long-distance and local transport. These investments are crucial for efficient public transport. Existing local trains will therefore be adapted to the standard of the modern Cityjet in order to maintain the attractiveness of local public transport.

“The local transport fleet forms the backbone of public transport. Keeping the trains in use competitive and meeting customer requirements for modern local transport vehicles is of great importance in order to continue to make local public transport attractive. By upgrading the Talent-1 and Desiro 5022 sets to Cityjet level, we are providing more comfort and capacity for our customers. The aim is to get even more people excited about train travel and commuting by using modern trains and, of course, the sustainability aspect also plays an important role in the modernisation of existing vehicles,” Sabine Stock, Board Member of ÖBB-Personenverkehr AG said.
