NY Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a USD 150 million investment to link the Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Ronkonkoma Station with the proposed North Terminal at MacArthur Airport. The initiative aims to improve accessibility, enhance infrastructure, and strengthen Long Island’s position as a key economic hub.

“Long Islanders deserve modern, efficient transit systems that make daily life easier and drive economic growth,” Governor Hochul stated. “This investment will create jobs, improve connectivity, and unlock new opportunities for businesses and tourism.”
The project builds on Governor Hochul’s previous USD 40 million commitment to the airport’s North Terminal and includes a pedestrian walkway, redesigned road networks, and infrastructure upgrades to improve passenger experience and reduce travel times.
MacArthur Airport, which evolved from a military airfield in 1942 to a recognised small airport, plays a vital role in Suffolk County’s transport system. The investment aligns with the Governor’s broader vision for Long Island, which prioritises transit improvements, housing expansion, and job creation.
Empire State Development President and CEO Hope Knight emphasised that the investment reinforces New York State’s commitment to world-class infrastructure. “The direct connection between MacArthur Airport and the LIRR network will drive economic growth, business development, and job creation for generations to come,” she said.
Empire State Development Board Chairman Kevin Law echoed these sentiments, stating that enhanced accessibility will boost economic development and sustainability.
LIRR President Rob Free noted that the project will reduce road congestion by encouraging train travel to the airport. “Moving MacArthur’s terminal closer to Ronkonkoma station will improve connectivity and support the airport’s growth,” he said.
Suffolk County Executive Ed Romaine welcomed the funding, highlighting its importance for economic expansion and environmental sustainability. Local legislators and officials also praised the initiative, citing its potential to transform the region’s transportation landscape.
Islip Town Supervisor Angie Carpenter underscored the investment’s role in fostering long-term economic development, job creation, and enhanced transport infrastructure. “We have a unique opportunity to create a thriving, connected hub that supports our workforce and strengthens our economy,” she said.
The project is set to improve transit accessibility, generate employment, and contribute to Long Island’s economic growth, reinforcing its position as a major transport and business hub.
