Siemens Mobility has presented the new G1 metro train for Nuremberg, which is expected to enter services in 2020.
The VAG Nürnberg operator has ordered 27 type G1 four-car metro trains with a further option for 7 additional trainsets which will be deployed on the Nuremberg’s U1 line. Over the next few years, the city will receive 34 new metro trains for the U1 metro line.
21 of the metro train will replace 42 DT1-type two-car trainsets that have been in operation since the 1975s and the 1980s. These vehicles have reached the end of their service life after traveling up to 3.5 million kilometers.
VAG placed orders for 13 additional vehicles in November 2018 and in March 2019. These trains will be used to replace 12 DT2-type subway trains from the 1990s and to significantly expand the company’s fleet.
“We expect passenger totals to continue to rise, particularly on our three metro lines. During peak periods, 440,000 people ride the subway each day, and more than 50 percent of them use the U1. Starting in 2022, we will use one vehicle type on the U1,” Josef Hasler, the CEO of VAG, said.
The new metro trains will be manufactured in Vienna while the core components will be manufactured in the Nuremberg metropolitan area and include such products as the drive converters, traction motors, auxiliary converter units and control equipment. The project management, development and service support will be provided from Erlangen.
VAG is investing EUR 263.2 million in the purchase of the 34 trainsets. A total of EUR 64.1 million will be covered by subsidies.
