Transport for New South Wales has announced the start of the tender process to build the new twin metro railway tunnels under Sydney Harbour and through the CBD for Stage 2 of Sydney Metro.
The first of five TBMs will be in the ground before the end of 2018 to deliver new twin railway tunnels from Chatswood to Sydenham.
The tunnelling contract is expected to be awarded mid next year.
“It’s full steam ahead on Sydney Metro. We’ve now taken the next step and opened expressions of interest for tunnelling, asking industry to partner with us in delivering this city-shaping project,” Minister for Transport and Infrastructure Andrew Constance said.
In January, tunnelling on Sydney Metro Northwest was finished, with services on track to start in the first half of 2019.
The fully automated Sydney Metro network will have the capacity to operate 30 trains an hour through the CBD in each direction, with trains required to run on time 98 per cent of the time.
