Norway commissioned the first ERTMS line

norwayNorway first ERTMS line Ski – Sarpsborg was equipped and commissioned. The Pilot Line is situated on Østfoldbanen’s Eastern line that will start commercial operations with an ERTMS-based signalling system Level 2 BL 2.3.0d., supplied by Bombardier Transportation.
‘With the opening of the Eastern line we move from relay-based technology from 1835 to modern computer-based solutions. This is what I called a technological revolution,’ Sverre Kjenne, Director of Jernbaneverket’s Signalling and Telecom Department said.
Jernbaneverket and Bombardier started to test the new signalling system along the tracks in November 2014, after several months of installation work and lab tests. Five railway stations on the Eastern Line went as well through a comprehensive renewal as part of the introduction of ERTMS.
Jernbaneverket is currently planning a national rollout of ERTMS. The goal is to equip the most important railway sections with ERTMS within 2030. Sections without Centralized Train Control (CTC) and will be prioritised together with sections equipped with older signalling systems. The start of the procurement process is scheduled for 2016.
