The construction of the Northern Latitudinal Railway, a new railway in the Yamalo-Nenets Region, will begin this year with the construction of a bridge across the Ob River, according to an announcement made by the region’s Governor Dmitry Kobylkin. Earlier statements put the beginning of construction works for the bridge in 2019. The new bridge will connect the cities Salekhard and Labytnangi. The local budget will allocate for it RUB 8.2 billion (USD 150 million).
Currently, specialists continue exploration and studies of the river’s bottom. This work is not easy, as the Ob River has another underground part filled with artesian water. The region will invite to carry out the project the workers who now participate in building the Kerch Bridge. The first teams are expected to arrive in the region in June.
The 700 km Northern Latitudinal Railway will connect the Northern and the Sverdlov railways and will be used for serving new deposits in Yamal’s northern areas.
