New York City mayor Bill de Blasio announced a plan to build a new light rail system that will link waterfront neighbourhoods in Brooklyn and Queens.
The proposed USD 2.5 billion Brooklyn Queens Connector (BQX) project is expected to be one of the largest tram system in the US.
The light rail system would run along a 25.7 km corridor is expected to have a weekday use rate of almost 50,000 passengers. “The neighbourhoods that run along the East River from northern Queens to Sunset Park are home to more than 400,000 people, including more than 40,000 New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) residents,” the mayor said.
Consultation with communities along the corridor will soon be launched, and the construction is expected to start in 2019. The project should be completed until 2024.
The light rail network is also expected to have the potential to generate more than USD 25 billion of economic impact for the city over 30 years.
