New works announced for Ballarat line upgrade

Ballarat line upgradeMajor works are carried out for Ballarat line upgrade including the Ararat and Maryborough lines and Melton Reservoir Viaduct, Victorian government informs.

Under the USD 2.5 million project, works will be performed for the replacement and improvement of the track, installing signalling equipment and upgrading the road surface at the Dowling Road level crossing in Windermere.

“We’re getting on with this work now to improve reliability and services for passengers on the Ballarat, Ararat and Maryborough lines. These works are going ahead with extra precautions in place to keep workers safe as we continue to slow the spread of coronavirus,” Minister for Public Transport Melissa Horne said.

The Ballarat Line Upgrade will enable much-needed extra services during peak times, and trains every 40 minutes off-peak, to service growing communities in Melbourne’s outer west and Ballarat.

The project included 18-km of track duplication works on the Deer Park – Melton section and at the Bacchus Marsh, the construction of a one new station which was completed (Cobblebank station), reconstruction and modernisation works for four existing stations, building passing loops and signalling improvement. In December 2019, essential work on the project was completed.

The project is implemented since 2017 and this year more services will be introduced along the line, following a period of disruption for the commissioning of second platforms, new track and passing loops, as well as safety testing and driver training.
