Etihad Rail awarded Egis the Project Management Consultancy (PMC) contract for the development of the second and third phases of United Arab Emirates railway network. Under the contract, Egis will cooperate with Etihad to oversee and supervise the different project contributors such as the engineering consultant responsible for preliminary design and construction supervision, the future design-and-build contractors, as well as the third parties.
The existing 264-km railway network will be expanded until 2024 by almost 900 km
Within the two stages. After its completion, it will be part of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) rail network, with rail connections to Saudi Arabia and Oman.
The stage 2 envisages the construction of a 628-km rail network connecting Mussafah, the Gulf ports of Khalifa and Jebel Ali, and to the Saudi and Omani borders.
The 279-km third stage will extend the network from Dubai to the northern regions of Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and Sharjah.
The network will be designed for mixt traffic which extends over 1,000 km and has nearly 40 railway facilities-logistics sites for freight, passenger stations, stabling and maintenance depots.
